Over four decades, Sergey Sukhonos published a series of works exploring the scale structure of the Universe, the principles of harmony and proportion, civilizational evolution, and the future of humanity.

Quantum Harmony

2020

An exploration of the systemic foundations of beauty — symmetry, harmony, and proportion — across living and non-living nature. Sukhonos shows that in the physical universe, symmetry dominates at every individual level, but when viewed across all levels simultaneously, a harmonic wave structure emerges. The book argues that the golden ratio and musical consonances (fifths, fourths) represent discrete “quanta of beauty” governing biological forms and temporal processes. It culminates in a unified model connecting the scale periodicity of the Universe with musical harmony and the 12-fold structure of both the octave and the cosmic hierarchy.

The Proportional Universe

2015

This work investigates the fundamental difference between living and non-living matter from a scale-structural perspective. Sukhonos demonstrates that the physical universe is filled with vast spaces and mass but minimal diversity, while the biological world occupies a narrow band of scales yet contains incomparably greater complexity and variety. He introduces the concept of informational complexity measured by the number of hierarchical levels within a system and proposes that life’s essential function in the Universe is the accumulation and growth of informational diversity. The book develops the idea that the proportional center of the scale axis is the birthplace of life.

Book cover: The Logic of Human Evolution

The Logic of Human Evolution

2008

An application of scale-structural thinking to the history and future of human civilization. Sukhonos examines the evolutionary trajectory of societies as a process of ascending through hierarchical levels — from tribes to peoples to states to civilizations — arguing that each transition follows the same structural logic observed across the physical scales of the Universe. The book proposes a theory of “scientific civilizations” and explores the cyclical patterns of innovation and social development.

Book cover: The Relay of Civilizations

The Relay of Civilizations

2020

Sukhonos develops his civilizational theory further, proposing that humanity’s development follows a relay pattern in which successive civilizations build upon the achievements of their predecessors. The book integrates scale thinking with historical analysis, examining how innovation waves, geopolitical shifts, and cultural transformations reflect deeper structural rhythms. It addresses Russia’s role in this process and offers scenarios for global development.

Book cover: The Absolute Good of Evolution

The Absolute Good of Evolution

2021

Sukhonos’s philosophical investigation into the concepts of good and evil from an evolutionary perspective. The book examines the roles of instinct, justice, and natural selection, arguing that evolution possesses an inherent directional tendency — one that can be described as an “absolute good” — toward increasing complexity, diversity, and consciousness. It draws on both biological and social evidence to support this thesis.

Book cover: The Matrix of Social Development

The Matrix of Social Development

2014

A systematic model of social evolution structured around the interplay of three archetypal social forces — creation, preservation, and destruction. Sukhonos maps these forces onto historical cycles in Russia and globally, offering a framework for understanding the alternation of periods of innovation, stability, and upheaval. The model draws on both Indian philosophical tradition and modern systems theory.
